Ruth spoke these famous words to her mother-in-law Naomi after Naomi urged both daughters-in-law to return to their own families following the deaths of their husbands. While Orpah turned back, Ruth clung to Naomi and pledged to follow her — and her God — wherever she went.

Ruth's declaration is one of the most beautiful expressions of loyalty in all of Scripture. But what makes it remarkable is the cost. Ruth was leaving behind everything familiar — her homeland, her culture, her family, her gods — to follow an aging widow into an uncertain future.

Loyalty is easy when the road ahead is clear. Ruth's loyalty was forged in grief and uncertainty, and that is what made it extraordinary.
