The Answer
Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 beginning with love, followed by joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Love comes first because it is the foundation from which all the other qualities grow.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."
— Galatians 5:22-23
Today's Devotion
✦Paul calls these qualities "fruit" — not "works" or "achievements." That word choice matters. Fruit is not manufactured through effort. It grows naturally from a healthy tree connected to a good source.
We cannot white-knuckle our way into patience. We cannot force ourselves into genuine joy. We cannot produce peace through sheer willpower. These qualities grow in us as we remain connected to Christ — rooted in prayer, nourished by His Word, and tended by His Spirit.
If you feel like you are lacking in one of these areas, the answer is not to try harder. The answer is to draw closer. Tend the root, and the fruit will come in its season.
