What did Jesus say is the greatest commandment?

When a Pharisee asked Jesus which commandment was the greatest, Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." He then added that the second greatest was to love your neighbor as yourself, saying all the Law and Prophets hang on these two commands.

When given the opportunity to simplify the entire law into one essential truth, Jesus chose love. Not obedience for its own sake. Not ritual or rule-keeping. Love.

This tells us something important: in the economy of God's kingdom, motivation matters as much as action. You can keep every rule perfectly and still miss the point entirely if your heart is not rooted in love.

The Pharisees had the rules mastered. What they lacked was love. And Jesus gently but firmly told them they had it backwards — love was never the byproduct of obedience. Obedience was always meant to be the byproduct of love.
