What did God tell Joshua after Moses died?

The Answer

After the death of Moses, God spoke directly to Joshua and commissioned him to lead Israel into the promised land. Three times in the opening chapter, God told Joshua to "be strong and courageous." He also promised, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

Notice that God did not say, "Be strong and courageous because nothing bad will happen." He said, "Be strong and courageous because I will be with you." The promise was not the absence of difficulty. The promise was the presence of God.

Joshua was stepping into enormous shoes. Moses was irreplaceable — the man who spoke with God face to face, who parted the Red Sea, who received the commandments on Sinai. And now Joshua was supposed to lead? It must have felt impossible.

But God did not ask Joshua to be Moses. He asked Joshua to be Joshua — and to trust that the same God who was with Moses would be with him, too.

Whatever transition you are facing, whatever mantle you have been handed, you do not need to be someone else. You need to be you, with God beside you. That is enough.
