What did Martha say to Jesus when He arrived after Lazarus had died?

When Jesus arrived in Bethany four days after Lazarus had died, Martha ran out to meet Him and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Yet in the very next breath she added, "But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." Her grief and her faith existed side by side.

Martha's words contain one of the most honest and beautiful tensions in all of Scripture. She was heartbroken. She was confused about why Jesus had waited. And yet — even in the middle of her grief — she still believed He could do something.

"If you had been here" is a statement of pain. "But I know that even now" is a statement of faith. Martha held both at the same time, and Jesus did not rebuke her for either one.

You do not need to resolve your grief before you come to God. You do not need to tidy up your doubts or silence your questions. You can bring Him the "if only" and the "but I still believe" in the same breath. He can hold both.
