What does the name "Emmanuel" mean?

The Answer
Emmanuel (also spelled Immanuel) means "God with us." The prophet Isaiah first used this name in a prophecy, and Matthew applies it to Jesus, declaring that in Christ, God literally came to dwell among humanity.
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel — which means 'God with us.'"
