The Answer
While Moses was on the mountain receiving the law, the people grew impatient and asked Aaron to make them gods to lead them. Aaron collected their gold earrings and fashioned an idol in the shape of a calf. When Moses came down and saw the people worshiping it, he broke the stone tablets in anger.
"He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'"
— Exodus 32:4
Today's Devotion
✦The golden calf was built out of impatience. Moses had been gone forty days, and the people decided that a god they could see now was better than a God who seemed delayed. Aaron, the appointed leader, caved to the crowd.
Most idols are not born of rebellion but of waiting. When God feels slow, we reach for something faster — a plan, a purchase, a person — and quietly transfer our trust to it.
Where is God asking you to wait right now? Name it, and then refuse to melt down your patience into a substitute. The God on the mountain has not forgotten the people at its base.
