In what town was Jesus born?

The Answer
Though Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth, a Roman census required them to travel to Bethlehem, Joseph's ancestral town as a descendant of David. There Mary gave birth to Jesus, fulfilling the prophecy of Micah 5:2 that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. What looked like an inconvenient government decree was actually God's providence at work.
"Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord."
— Luke 2:11
Today's Devotion
✦Bethlehem was a small town — easy to overlook, far from the centers of power. Yet God chose it as the stage for the most important birth in history. He has a habit of doing His greatest work in the places the world ignores.
Mary and Joseph did not choose the timing of the census or the crowded inn. Their circumstances looked like chaos, but every detail was moving them exactly where God's promises said they needed to be.
If your life feels rerouted right now — plans disrupted, timing off, doors closed — take heart. God is not thrown off by detours. Sometimes the detour is the plan.
