The Answer
Paul lists nine qualities as the fruit of the Spirit, beginning with love: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Many note that 'fruit' is singular — these are not nine separate achievements but one integrated character that the Holy Spirit grows in a believer, and love leads the list.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
— Galatians 5:22-23
Today's Devotion
✦Paul calls these qualities fruit, not works — and the difference matters. Works are manufactured; fruit is grown. You cannot bolt an apple onto a tree and call it an orchard. Fruit comes from health at the root.
That is why self-improvement projects so often stall. We try to act more loving, more patient, more self-controlled by sheer effort, treating symptoms instead of the source. But the fruit of the Spirit grows from abiding — staying connected to Jesus the way a branch stays connected to the vine.
Today, instead of straining to produce better behavior, tend the root. Time in the Word, honest prayer, quick repentance. Healthy roots cannot help but bear fruit.
