How many men did God tell Gideon to keep for battle against the Midianites?

The Answer
Gideon started with 32,000 soldiers, but God said that was too many — Israel might boast that her own strength had saved her. After the fearful went home and the rest were tested by how they drank at the water, only 300 men remained. With trumpets, torches, and empty jars, those 300 routed the vast Midianite army.
"The Lord said to Gideon, 'With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.'"
— Judges 7:7
Today's Devotion
✦God's math runs backward from ours. We add resources to increase our odds; God subtracted Gideon's army until victory could only be explained one way.
Sometimes the shrinking in your life — the smaller budget, the reduced team, the thinner margin — is not a setback but a setup. God is removing everything you might be tempted to take credit for.
If your resources feel like 300 against an army, you are in familiar biblical territory. Lift the torch you have. God does His most famous work through people who are obviously outnumbered.
