The Answer
Under Nehemiah's leadership, the returned exiles rebuilt Jerusalem's wall in just fifty-two days, despite ridicule, threats, and plots from enemies like Sanballat and Tobiah. The workers built with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other. Even Israel's enemies recognized that the work had been done with the help of God.
"So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days."
— Nehemiah 6:15
Today's Devotion
✦The wall had lain in ruins for roughly a century and a half. Generations had walked past the rubble and accepted it as permanent. Then one cupbearer prayed, planned, and picked up a trowel — and in fifty-two days the impossible was finished.
Nehemiah's secret was not speed but steadiness under opposition. When enemies mocked, he prayed and kept building. When they threatened, he posted a guard and kept building. When they tried to distract him, he answered, 'I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.'
What rubble have you accepted as permanent? Broken things do not have to stay broken. Pray, plan, pick up your trowel — and refuse to come down.
