The Answer
On resurrection Sunday, two disciples were walking the seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing the crucifixion in confusion and grief. Jesus Himself came alongside them, but they were kept from recognizing Him. He explained the Scriptures concerning Himself, and their eyes were finally opened when He broke bread at their table — then He disappeared from their sight.
"They asked each other, 'Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?'"
— Luke 24:32
Today's Devotion
✦The Emmaus disciples were walking away from Jerusalem — away from the community, away from hope. They had the facts of the resurrection reports but not the faith. And it was precisely there, on the road of disappointment, that Jesus drew near.
He did not announce Himself. He walked with them, asked questions, listened to their grief, and then patiently opened the Scriptures. Recognition came not in a lightning bolt but in an ordinary moment: the breaking of bread.
Jesus still meets people on their Emmaus roads — in seasons of confusion, when hope feels buried. Look back at your hardest stretches. Was there not a warmth, a presence, a strange comfort you could not explain? Hearts still burn when He walks beside us.
