When God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said 'Ask for whatever you want me to give you,' the young king asked for a discerning heart to govern God's people and to distinguish between right and wrong. God was so pleased that He granted Solomon wisdom beyond compare — and also gave him the riches and honor he had not requested.
"So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?"

✦It was history's greatest blank check: ask for anything. Solomon's answer reveals what he believed his real problem was. Not a shortage of money or power — a shortage of wisdom for the weight he carried.
Our prayers reveal the same thing. Listen to what you ask God for most often, and you will hear what you believe you lack most deeply.
James says God still gives wisdom generously to all who ask. Before the meetings, decisions, and conversations ahead of you today, pray Solomon's prayer: 'Give me a discerning heart.' It is a request God loves to grant.
