What kind of tree did Zacchaeus climb in order to see Jesus?

The Answer
Zacchaeus, a wealthy chief tax collector in Jericho, was too short to see Jesus over the crowd, so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree. Jesus stopped beneath the tree, called him by name, and invited Himself to Zacchaeus' house. The encounter transformed him — Zacchaeus pledged to give half his possessions to the poor and to repay anyone he had cheated four times over.
"So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way."
— Luke 19:4
Today's Devotion
✦Zacchaeus was rich, powerful, and thoroughly disliked. But something in him was hungry enough to abandon his dignity, hitch up his robes, and climb a tree like a child — just for a glimpse of Jesus.
And here is the beautiful reversal: Zacchaeus climbed to see Jesus, but it was Jesus who saw him. He stopped, looked up, called him by name, and chose his house out of all the homes in Jericho. The seeker discovered he had been sought all along.
What would you be willing to look foolish for? Sometimes the biggest barrier between us and a life-changing encounter with God is our own dignity. Climb the tree. He is already looking for you.
