What animal did Jesus ride during His triumphal entry into Jerusalem?

The Answer
Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a young donkey while crowds spread cloaks and palm branches on the road, shouting 'Hosanna!' This fulfilled Zechariah's prophecy that Israel's king would come gentle and riding on a donkey. Conquering generals rode war horses; Jesus deliberately chose the mount of a king who comes in peace.
"Say to Daughter Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"
— Matthew 21:5
Today's Devotion
✦Everything about the triumphal entry defied expectations. The crowds wanted a warrior king to overthrow Rome; Jesus came as a servant king riding a borrowed donkey. They wanted a throne; He was headed to a cross.
The same crowd that shouted 'Hosanna!' on Sunday would shout 'Crucify!' by Friday — largely because Jesus refused to be the kind of king they demanded. He would not be managed, and He still won't.
It is worth asking honestly: do I follow Jesus for who He is, or for what I expect Him to do for me? A king who rides a donkey to His own death is a king whose love can be trusted absolutely — even when His plans surprise us.
