Identity & Worth
Woven on Purpose
Verse of the Day
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Psalm 139:13-14
Before anyone had an opinion about you, God was already at work on you — deliberately, personally, and with care.
The Story Behind This Verse
Psalm 139 is attributed to David and is one of the most intimate poems in the Psalter. It moves through a series of staggering claims: God knows every thought, God is present everywhere, and — in these verses — God was personally involved in forming each human life before birth. This is not abstract theology. It is a man marveling that he was never anonymous.
The imagery is craftsmanship, not mass production. "Knit" pictures the slow, deliberate work of weaving — thread by thread, with attention. In the ancient Near East, surrounding cultures often told creation stories where humans were an afterthought or a labor force for the gods. Israel's poetry insisted on something radical: every individual person is a handmade work of God.
The word "fearfully" can trip up modern readers. It does not mean God made you to be afraid. It carries the older sense of awe — you are awesomely made, the kind of work that should produce wonder in anyone paying attention. David pairs it with a striking note of settled conviction: "I know that full well."
What This Means for Today
Most of us assess our worth by mirrors, metrics, and other people's reactions. This psalm relocates the question entirely. Your value was established in the making, by the Maker — before you accomplished anything, and before anyone else weighed in. Criticism and comparison can bruise you, but they cannot un-make you.
Notice that David responds to this truth with praise, not self-esteem exercises. The healthiest view of self is not standing taller in front of the mirror — it is turning toward the Craftsman with gratitude. Wonder at his work happens to include you.

Whose opinion of you has been functioning as the verdict on your worth?
What would it look like to "know full well" that you are wonderfully made, rather than politely agreeing with the idea?
How might seeing others as deliberately woven by God change how you treat the most difficult person in your life?
